On the 6th of January 1861, Victor Horta was Born in Ghent. His father was a shoemaker and his forefathers have Spanish roots.
Barely 12 years old, he was predestined for a future as an architect. He studies architect designs at the Academy of ‘Beautiful Arts’ in Ghent. Then the heart of the Artist opens when he moves to Paris in 1878 and he becomes a student as an architect – interior decorator in the Paris district Montmartre.
At the age of 19 year, Victor Horta marries Pauline Heyse and the young couple moves to Brussels in Belgium. As a trainee of the “court architect” of King Leopold the II, Victor Horta works between 1882 and 1889 on a few big Brussels building projects. His biggest reward was his design for the National Parlia ment. In 1893 Victor Horta became famous after building 2 private houses in Brussels House Tassel & House Autrique. This style had never been done before! Metal constructions aren’t hidden anymore and the interior is based on ocean ships. A new style is created : Art Nouveau.
The Art Nouveau Hall, is a carefully rebuilt version of the original ‘La Maison du Peuple’ designed by Victor Horta 1896 and reconstructed using the original materials in Antwerp in 1993 by the architect Willy Verstraete.
